For those just starting out with keeping fish as a pet, it is best to consider a few species that are low maintenance and are extremely durable. Until you’re taken the time to care and maintain for pets, you can’t be sure that this is your thing, that you enjoy it, or want to continue. Certain species require a great deal of care and even slight warming or cooling of the freshwater aquariums can be fatal. Pet owners that suffer their loved ones?deaths will tend to get frustrated and never try to have a pet again. Often, it is not that they are uncaring or incapable of taking care of a pet; it’s just that they selected the wrong species to start with.
One fish that is a good starter fish is the Black Tetras. They are very durable and can handle high ammonia and nitrite levels that often come with starting a new fish tank. They are very active and social. It is recommended to have a group of four or more, depending on tank space.
Tiger Barbs are also great for breaking in a new aquarium. They are even more active than Black Tetras and will provide great entertainment racing around the tank. On the down side, this fish does often bite the fins of slower fish so be careful what other fish are in the tank with them.
Siamese Fighting fish are colorful and have a low waste output. However in terms of entertainment value, they are lacking. They are quite sedentary. They require a bit more care than those mentioned above. Water should be kept around 70 to 72 degrees and cleaned often.
For beginners that jumped right into a saltwater aquarium, the Ocellaris Clown would be the safest bet. They are quite social and get along with most species. They thrive fairly well and commercial food is easy to find. Many people love their bright coloring and their rocking horse motion that is very entertaining.
Fish that will work for you include the Green Catfish that travels along the bottom of the tank and cleans up scraps of food and other debris. They are well known for getting along well with most other species and have an armor so other fish that are aggressive generally aren’t able to hurt them.
A fish that will provide great entertainment is the Platies. They do a not-to-be-missed mating dance and are fairly easy to care for. On the downside, once they do produce young, they generally eat them, but that would serve as a great lesson when the kids misbehave.
